NationStates is an online game in which you can simulate the creation of your own nation based on your own ideals (or what you claim to be your ideals). It was created by Max Barry, the author of Jennifer Government. Whether you are a political aficionado or just looking to have some fun online, NationStates is one of the more interesting and intellectual online games available. Did I mention NationStates is free? Well, it is. Yay!
Creating a Nation
There’s a link on the home page that says “Create a Nation.” Click on this and you will be taken to a page that allows you to choose a name for your nation as well as a motto, currency, national animal and flag. Your nation’s name, motto, etc. can be pretty much anything, serious or completely ridiculous. Some examples of crazy NationStates user names:
-The Muu Shoo Ali Baba of Bobs Taco Shack
– The Queendom of Kindjal
-The Water Bottles are Full of H2SO4
-The Leather Clad Kingdom of Suicidal Sex Dolls
-The United States of America 2050
-The Genocidal Third World Nation of Ninja Bear
-The United Kingdom of Confused Sheep
The more creative, the better. What’s the point of having a boring NationStates name?
Your NationStates motto can be as strange, if not stranger than the NationStates name.
Here are a few strange NationStates mottos:
-“Where Idiots come to live!”
-“Na na na na na na na na Leader! ”
-“WE ARE THE BEST NATION EVER!”
-“Laws? What laws?”
-“I knocked up Palin’s kid”
-“Pimpin’ aint easy”
-“This is my land bitch”
After you’ve come up with an awesome motto, you need to take a short test about your ideological views. Obviously, you can answer the questions truthfully, or if you are creating your nation with only the intent of torturing virtual citizens, you can choose the most coldhearted answers. After you complete the quiz, NationStates will categorize your nation based on the answers. You may fall under categories such as Democratic Socialists, Psychotic Dictatorships, Iron Fist Consumerists, Civil Rights Lovefest or a whole slew of other NationStates categories.
Choosing a Region
All new nations are initially placed in the NationStates region called “South Pacific.” You have the option of staying there or joining another NationStates region. Or you could create your own region if you want. When I joined NationStates and told my friends about it, we decided to create our NationStates region together and get other people from my high school to join. Now we’re all at college, and find our NationStates region a great, relaxing way to hang out online and catch up with each other.
If you decide that you hate the region you’re in, you can always move to a new one! There should be a link on your region’s page that lets you switch regions.
Reacting to issues that arise in your nation will determine the direction your nation goes in. They can be about anything, from abortion to humanitarian aid, violent video games, public breastfeeding and even attacking meatballs. Each issue will have two or more viewpoints, presented by various citizens of your nation. You can side with any of the presented viewpoints or choose to dismiss the issue if you don’t agree with any of them. Be forewarned: some of your decisions may have unintended consequences.
Now that you know that basics of NationStates, I suggest you get on it and create a nation! It is a lot of fun and who knows, you just might learn something new!
